Houston, June 2003

We are deep into summer now, and after two months of drought we are now getting some rain.

Daytime temperatures are about 90-95 degrees , Humidity is typically 60-100%
Nighttime temperatures drop to something like 78-82 degrees, meaning that just about everything outside should be done after dark - but not so with bulb gardening...

June is much more subdued, bulb wise, but at least we have something, and dont have to resort to "bulbs with interesting foliage" this month (a plan for if I get really desperate...)

A mainstay of every Houston garden should be oriental lilies - but for some reason they are not - I love the smell of them, and of course the huge, spectacular flowers.

First Lily to pop out this month was an unknown variety, sporting 8 inch flowers as shown here...

Perhaps the best known of the oriental lilies, this is "stargazer" - these are growing well in my garden and forming a small colony

Next we have an aroid - a Caladium flower. The flower never really opens up, but just forms an almost vase-like shape formed from a single "petal".

The real reason why anyone grows Caladiums is for the spectacular foliage, coloured red, pink, white and green, which will feature in my expected "foliage" month (August or September?)...
