Houston, January 2003

Well, Houston doesnt really have much of a winter - It can last about 3 days and normally comes in January.

During January and February, Houston will have alternately cold days, where the nighttime temperature can drop below freezing, and then wonderful days like today, which are true summertime temperatures (I think I got sunburned today playing golf (feb 1st).

All of this has limited the bulb-count this month, prompting me to look through glossy catalogs ready for the summer months... anyway, here goes

Just about the only "new" thing to emerge this month was a white cyclamen. As you will recall we had our first red one make flowers last month.

In the grand scheme of our garden, it is a pretty minor event, but for the bulb bores site it was very welcome, in an otherwise quiet month!

Many other bulbs are sprouting ready to flower in the coming months, some are just dying back at this months chilly conditions and some look like they might never bloom again (we have some muscari from last season that, although leafy, look a little pathetic and probably will be a shadow of thier former selves this year)

A curious snippet for bulb bores - We saw some alleged "onions" in a supermarket, with some onion-related name - but in fact the small print explained that these were muscari bulbs! I was tempted to buy some (they were quite large) and liberate them , but given the nursery-bought ones that we have from last year, I think they would do someone more good as a food

Arent muscari poisonous?

Although they made it into Decembers bulb descriptions, I have to give a special mention to these Grand Soliel D'Or bulbs - They really are looking great, and it seems that they start to bloom just as the paperwhites are fading.

The paperwhites are all gone this month, but these fellas are keeping up the show very nicely. Some are have all-yellow cups and petals , and some seem to have a more orangey cup. All look nice in sunshine and smell strongly (although not especially pleasant to my nose)

I also noticed that I had a few double flowering paperwhites (and chinese sacred lilies) during the month. I havent seen any double Grand Soliel D'ors though. I should have photographed them, but maybe next year...
