August, 2003

August rolls around once again - If I were a plant, and had to choose which month I would flower, I think that August would be my last choice, since the petals would be burned up by about 10am, and everyone would be hiding indoors anyway.

Evidently bulbs are no different, and it has been a no-show from them this month. Luckily, on a technicality, I am able to include gingers on this page...

Although the last ginger to emerge from winter (shoots appeared in may) , Globba winitii is the first of our gingers to flower. It is commonly known as "Dancing ladies" ginger.

A close relation to the first plant, Globba racemosa (also known as dancing ladies ginger), has been very sucessful for us, with many seedlings growing up from last years "fruits" - small, spongelike white pods
